Janet Green Ward was born in Kansas City, Kansas in 1891 to William E. Green and Mary Woods. She married Rev. A. Wayman Ward and became the matriarch of the Ward family, supporting her husband's ministry and civil rights work throughout their lives together. She was mother to seven children and helped establish the family's presence in Chicago during the Great Migration.
Janet Ward lived through the Great Migration, when millions of African Americans moved from the South to northern cities. As the wife of a prominent AME Church pastor and civil rights leader, she played a crucial role in supporting the community during this transformative period.
